Searching for a medical assistant training program can be a confusing process. Most people are tempted to enroll in any program that offers medical assistant courses, but I would encourage you to ask a few questions before you enroll in any program:
Does the particular program meet your career needs?
MAs perform a variety of tasks in their careers, working in hospitals, doctors' offices, or other health care settings. Still, many medical assistants choose to specialize in a particular area. Some of these areas include podiatric medical assistants and ophthalmic medical assistants. If you wish you specialize, does the program offer a seamless transition to the kind of work you would like to do?
Does the program offer an externship?
MAs may interact with a variety of professionals from doctors, nurses, patients, medical billing staff, insurance representatives, or pharmacists. Does your training program offer the kind of real-world experience in an externship that you will need in order to secure a job after graduation?
Is the program accredited?
Accreditation offers a stamp of approval that your medical assistant training program or school has reached a level of quality in training and instruction. Accreditation ensures that you have received excellent training, which translates to confidence that you will perform well on the job (which future employers may also look for as well!). Make sure your medical assistant training program or school is working as well for you and your future career goals as you will be working while studying in the program!
